Very Simple Tumblr SEO - Better Page Titles

1. Go to http://www.tumblr.com/customize , click Theme, and change the text inside your title tag to this:

<title>{block:PostSummary}{PostSummary} - {/block:PostSummary}{Title}</title>

(NB: you must be using a custom HTML theme on tumblr for this to work.)  What you probably had inside the title tag before was something like this:

<title>{Title}{block:PostTitle} - {PostTitle}{/block:PostTitle}</title>

The problem with the default title tag, PostTitle, is that it’s blank for everything except Text posts. The PostSummary, however, will work for pictures and other types of Tumblr posts—it just grabs the first few lines of the Caption and uses that as the title. This is the same text Tumblr uses for page slugs that show up in the urls of Tumblr post pages in your address bar.

2. Now, make sure the first few lines of your picture captions are descriptive and title-like. (ahem, check out the first line of this post.)

Besides making your posts nicer for search bots, all your page titles will be nicer for people, too. So if you bookmark one of your Tumblr posts with bit.ly or delicious, you’ll actually be able to know what it is by looking at the title of your bookmark.

I was just about to lament some other unfortunately lacking SEO essentials, but I think I just figured out a nice way to hack these. Stay tuned for Tumblr SEO hacks, part 2.
